Mission Statement
Our mission at the Battle for a Cure Foundation is to enrich the lives of children fighting cancer by offering various outreach programs to them and their families, and by funding the most promising research specifically targeted toward childhood cancers. We are dedicated to encouraging citizens to raise awareness and money for childhood cancer until a cure is found. We want to give back Hope to the children and families affected by childhood cancer- the No. 1 disease killer of children.
In 2008 I was blessed to meet a little boy named Joshua Edmonson. At the time, 4 year old Joshua had just been diagnosed with an extremely rare disease called CRMO. He was inpatient at Dell Children’s Hospital for two months. During those long months, Joshua learned that he could call my cell phone at any time of the day or night and I would bring him whatever he wanted. He called and asked for pajama pants, movies, food, or anything else that made him happy at the time. During those deliveries to the hospital, I learned the cruel realities of childhood cancer. I knew that children could get cancer, but I did not fully understand until I saw it with my own eyes. I was 22 years old, and the children staying at the hospital touched me to the depths of my soul. I desperately wanted to help. Out of that love for the children and the desperation to help was born the Hope Box Program. Through the program, I used my own money to send gifts to children fighting cancer and their siblings from all over the U.S. Once I was out of money, I would call up my parents, my sister and my friends and ask them to help. This “hobby” continued on like this until 2012. By pooling our money together, my family was able to help a few hundred children during this time.
In an effort to reach more children and families, we filed for our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2011.
In August of 2012 we were approved. With the extra financial support we were able to offer additional outreach programs to children in our own community.
From hospital visits to private events, we have met so many extraordinary kids living right here in Austin, TX. While we have never actually counted the number of Hope Boxes that we have sent out since 2008, we can safely say that it would be in the thousands.
There are many definitions of success. To us, success is the widest smile on a child’s face after opening their gifts; it’s the squeals of laughter that are heard through the halls of a pediatric oncology floor; it’s the grateful tears of parents who long to see their children happy in the darkest moments of their lives. Success can be measured many ways, but for us, success is measured in the amount of joy and love that we are able to give to others. This organization has been very successful over the past seven years. We have poured our hearts and souls into giving these children the love and laughter that they deserve.
Here's how you can help.
